He was checking a fence line. Then the universe opened.

Elias Ward finds the craft half-buried in the red dirt of the Australian outback. It has no markings, no wreckage field, and no reason to be there.

When he steps inside, Earth vanishes.

The craft takes him to Alpha-1 - a silent, ancient military station hidden in orbit near Jupiter. There is no crew waiting. No briefing. No chain of command. Only a station-sized artificial intelligence, a dead bridge, and a chair that will not take no for an answer.

Ward is not handed answers.

He is handed authority.

Alpha-1 controls fleets, weapons, surveillance systems, and powers far beyond anything Earth has ever imagined. It was built for a war humanity forgot, against beings who once were human but now call themselves Gods.

They conquered death.

They lost children.

Then they lost mercy.

Now Ward must decide what Alpha-1 becomes under his command: shield, weapon, prison, or something better than the system that built it.

Because the Gods are still out there.

And Alpha-1 has just woken up.
