Los cementerios constituyen un fragmento del espacio social urbano. En su gramática constructiva es posible identificar la reproducción social de los distintos registros culturales y procesos históricos presentes en la ciudad. Esta reflexión apunta hacia una lectura pluridisciplinaria de la necrópolis, acentuando el rol de los cementerios como fuente documental-monumental para reconstruir la historia de las mentalidades que se fraguan en el corazón de la ciudad. Desde esta perspectiva, la autora hace una reconstrucción histórica de los espacios de la muerte y de la metamorfosis semántica que han sufrido estos espacios. El eje central que articula esta investigación es el cementerio El Espejo, ubicado en Mérida, en la región andina venezolana. A través del análisis de la constitución histórica del cementerio, de la ornamentación funeraria y del corpus documental de testamentos, leyes y notas luctuosas, la autora nos propone una vía para explicar, desde la perspectiva de la Historia de las Mentalidades y la Nueva Historia Cultural, las relaciones históricas y culturales que se dieron entre este cementerio y la ciudad de Mérida, durante la primera mitad del siglo XX.
