One of the themes throughout Baselitz's long career is the idea that history repeats itself. This enlightening volume shows how, in his series "The Black Paintings," which focuses on the motif of the eagle, the renowned painter and sculptor applies that idea to his earlier work. Presenting these recent paintings alongside bronze sculptures from the same period, as well as works from the mid 1960s to today, the formal and contextual renewal to which Baselitz repeatedly subjects his own work is demonstrated retrospectively.
