From Dumbarton in Scotland to Kentucky in the USA, and South Africa, follow the adventures and disasters of the Cairns family from birth of three infants in Overtoun Maternity Hospital, Dumbarton to adulthood as veterinarians. Absorb this medical, crime drama as events changes lives wrought by anxiety.
From volume one swapping infants in a maternity home to killing horses to claim insurance then breathe with relief when the vets foil a plot to poach rhino in South Africa.
This novel: the first in a series of five presents a detailed and complex narrative set primarily in a maternity hospital environment. Initially. it explores the challenges of infant care, hospital politics, and moral conflicts, with later volumes also incorporating reflections on veterinary medicine and homeopathy.
The story is driven by the critical care of newborn infants, especially the swapped Stewart twins, and the consequences of these events on individuals and the institution.
The core medical drama revolves around the fragile infant Rogan, who faces a life-threatening infection that risks septicaemia and death. The medical team, including Doctor Patrick Cairns, Sister Holly Kenny, and anaesthetist Jimmy, undertake urgent surgery to evacuate an abscess and manage the infant's unstable cardiac condition. Their expert care allows Rogan to begin recovering, demonstrating the resilience newborns can display under skilled medical intervention.
The narrative also highlights the specialised care given to the Stewart twins, Calder, and Rogan, who were fraudulently swapped at birth.
A pivotal ethical conflict centres on Matron Deirdre Cairns' secret decision to swap the infants to protect her sister Fiona from her abusive husband William Henderson.
Amidst the medical and ethical turmoil, a romantic subplot develops between Doctor Patrick Cairns and Sister Holly Kenny. Their professional partnership gradually deepens into a personal bond, culminating in Patrick's marriage proposal, symbolising hope.. Their relationship is subtly supported and observed by colleagues and even the hospital's dogs, adding emotional depth and moments of tenderness to the narrative.
The hospital setting is depicted as intense and often chaotic, especially during emergencies that stretch resources and staff capacity. Matron Cairns and her team manage increased patient loads and critical cases, balancing professionalism with personal crises. Internal conflicts arise over staff promotions and hospital politics, impacting careers and relationships. The narrative also reveals the difficulties of maintaining secrecy around sensitive cases and managing the emotional toll on staff.
The novel explores profound themes such as trust and betrayal within the hospital community, the psychological impact of ethical decisions, and the complexity of human imperfection. Deirdre's moral struggle and mental health challenges highlight the heavy psychological burden borne by healthcare professionals. Sister Grant's mental deterioration and Henderson's internal conflicts, symbolised by the "Mirror Man" motif, further illustrate these themes.
Interspersed within the human medical drama subsequent volumes reflect veterinary medicine and homeopathy, drawn from the author's broader professional experience. These sections provide detailed discussions on homeopathic remedies and treatment protocols for animals, enriching the narrative by linking human and animal healthcare themes, though they remain peripheral to the main story.
The narrative concludes with a mixture of unresolved tensions and cautious optimism. The infants show signs of recovery and gradual acceptance by their families, while personal relationships provide hope amid adversity. However, the looming threat of exposure of hospital secrets, Henderson's confrontations, and Sister Grant's mental decline indicate ongoing challenges ahead for the hospital community.
