B.S. Johnson was a groundbreaking and controversial British writer of the 1960s and early 1970s. Growing academic interest and the republication of all his major works has been reinforced by the mainstream success of Jonathan Coe's award-winning biography Like A Fiery Elephant (2004). With a preface by Coe, this collection gathers the work of a new generation of scholars returning to Johnson's work in the light of the biography, liberated from both past cycles of criticism and old squabbles concerning Johnson. The essays offer genuinely new readings and reactions to the lively diversity of Johnson's work and the ongoing contemporaneity of his concerns. With an introduction which sets Johnson in historical and critical context, a chronology that summarizes the author's life and work, and an annotated bibliography which reviews previous critical writing, this collection provides a thorough introduction to Johnson's work while exploring new critical perspectives.
