Apparently, Not Today...
Martin has been told he's dying.
He's not taking it particularly well.
Not that anyone would know. Martin has become very good at saying he's fine, nodding at doctors, avoiding difficult conversations and pretending that everything is under control.
It isn't.
After deciding that his impending death is something he ought to take into his own hands, Martin discovers that even dying turns out to be more complicated than expected. Plans go wrong. Other people get involved. And somehow, despite his best efforts, Martin keeps finding himself surrounded by people who seem determined to make his life considerably more difficult.
There are hospital appointments, terrible sandwiches, increasingly complicated paperwork, an unfortunate amount of fundraising, and a collection of people Martin never intended to become attached to.
There's also Dave.
Martin isn't entirely sure what to make of Dave.
Or Keith.
Or his sister.
Or the people who keep asking if he's alright.
Or the increasingly uncomfortable realisation that perhaps being left alone isn't quite what he wants after all.
Funny, dark and painfully ordinary, Apparently, Not Today... is a British dark comedy about death, friendship, loneliness and the strange ways people cope when life refuses to go according to plan.
A story about men's mental health, family, friendship and the absurdity of everyday life, this is a novel about the things we don't say, the people we don't expect to matter, and the inconvenient possibility that the world hasn't quite finished with us yet.
