Where did our gods come from - and why has the human mind always searched for something beyond itself?
Before the Gods Had Names takes the reader on a journey backwards through human belief: from the familiar God of modern religion to Yahweh, El, Baal and Asherah; through the ancient civilisations of Canaan and Mesopotamia; and further still, beyond written history, to our prehistoric ancestors confronting nature, dreams, death and the unknown.
Rather than asking which religion is right, the book asks a deeper question: why are human beings capable of believing in gods at all?
It explores how imagination, pattern recognition, storytelling, altered states, culture and our instinct to search for causes may have shaped supernatural belief - while carefully separating evidence from speculation and acknowledging what science still cannot answer.

The journey eventually turns inward, towards perhaps the greatest mystery of all: consciousness. What is the difference between consciousness and imagination? Why does being alive feel like anything at all? And what happens to our understanding of God when we realise that every concept of God we have ever encountered must ultimately pass through the human mind?
Finally, the book brings the entire story full circle:
Universe → stars → Sun → Earth → life → evolution → brain → consciousness → imagination → civilisation.

It arrives not at another doctrine, but at a deeply personal idea: perhaps we are not the Almighty, but we are the conscious authors of what we do with the lives we have. Meaning does not necessarily have to fall from the sky. It can be created through the choices we make and the lives we affect.
