Byron

Byron is fifteen years old, and he has already figured out the one rule that matters: be smart enough, charming enough, fast enough - and the normal rules don't apply to you.

A high school sophomore who runs math circles around high school seniors. A loverboy with a girl on every floor of the school, including the ones who belong to someone else. A kid who has turned tutoring into a business, loyalty into currency, and confidence into a weapon - all before he has even turned sixteen.

Everyone wants to be near Byron. Boys want to be him. Girls want to be with him. Teachers see a future in him that he can barely be bothered to protect. And for one intoxicating stretch of his sophomore year, it feels like the entire school belongs to him.

Almost everyone agrees.

Trevor doesn't.

Bigger, older, and untouchable in every way Byron isn't, Trevor is the one variable Byron can't solve for - the one person who looks at him and doesn't blink. What starts as tension in a hallway becomes a war fought through girls, parties, and pride, each side pushing further than the last, neither willing to be the one who steps back first.

Byron knows he can't beat Trevor in a fair fight. So he stops fighting fair.

When the tension finally breaks, it doesn't break clean. It breaks with a bat, a locked door, and a decision that cannot be undone - one that will cost Byron everything he spent a year building, and force him to reckon with the question no amount of intelligence could help him answer: what do you actually become when you've been given more power than you know how to hold?
