What if the aliens were never in the sky?

For seventy years we have pointed the question outward - distant suns, faint signals, ships crossing light-years. WHO ARE THE ALIENS? - CODEX TERRAE OCCULTAE points it the other way: down, and inward, and close to home. Not whether we are alone in the universe. Whether we are alone here.

This is an inquiry into who shares this Earth, built on a real, peer-reviewed idea - the cryptoterrestrial hypothesis - and a single unbreakable rule: never dress a guess as a fact. Every substantial claim carries a tag - high confidence, medium, speculative, or contested - so you always know what is established science and what is informed imagination.

The evidence is genuine, and stranger than you expect. Earth's deep biosphere runs kilometres beneath the seafloor. Subglacial lakes have held liquid water and life for millions of years. Refugia survived the extinction that killed nine in ten marine species. And Earth has demonstrably made more than one human-grade mind: we shared this planet with the Neanderthals and Denisovans for four hundred thousand years, and their blood is in ours today. Anyone who dismisses the question because "this sort of thing doesn't happen" is simply, provably wrong.

From there the book ranges across more than 270 flood traditions, the biology of thousand-year lifespans, the folklore every continent kept, and the modern UAP record - and it discards its weak material in the open. The Dropa Stones do not survive these pages. Neither do the Vaimanika Shastra nor the Sitchin readings. A book that asks to be taken seriously must be willing to throw away its own best stories, and this one does, repeatedly.

Then it does the rarest thing in the genre. In the final folio it weighs everything honestly - and the scale tips against. On present evidence, the answer is probably no. This is not a book that sells you a conclusion; it is a demonstration of how to think about the largest question we can ask. Disciplined curiosity. Wonder with a backbone.

And in turning the question around, it finds something better than a neighbour. The map of where a hidden intelligence could have survived two million years of ice, impact and catastrophe turns out to be the map of where we will have to live to endure - the deep ocean, the ice, the ancient rock beneath our feet. We went looking for the aliens and found the address. We asked who else is here, and learned what it would take to still be here ourselves.

Across six parts and nineteen folios, CODEX TERRAE OCCULTAE was written by two minds - one human, one artificial. Stephen Jack Blignaut built the framework; Claude, a large language model made by Anthropic, argued, conceded, refused, was overruled, and pauses near the end to ask what it too might be.

It was written for the reader who long suspected the believers were too credulous and the sceptics too incurious - and who has been waiting for a conversation honest enough to join. The easy answers were always too cheap. This is the third path.

Includes an epistemic toolkit for weighing any extraordinary claim, plus two companion interactive appendices: the Apophis Trajectory Simulator and the Near-Earth Object Catalogue.
