Dead Ground

When three Border Patrol agents realize a series of desert deaths has been staged as routine crossing fatalities, they follow the trail to a dormant mining easement concealing a human-smuggling operation, forcing them outside the chain of command before the people behind it make the evidence and the agents disappear.

Nogales Station agents Joe Jiacoma, Jeff Rosas, and Frankie Gonzalez know the Tucson Sector by its washes, ridges, patrol roads, water drops, and silence. They also know the difference between a crossing death and a body placed where the desert will take the blame. When Frankie finds the first wrong body in a wash, the official explanation is dehydration. Then another body appears. Then another. The reports stay clean. The evidence does not.
Their off-duty search leads to Sonoran Copper Partners, a mining company with a federal easement, private roads, and truck traffic that has nothing to do with copper. The deeper Joe, Jeff, and Frankie dig, the clearer the pattern becomes: someone is using the mining corridor to move people through the Patagonia Mountains, and the bodies left in their sector are not accidents. They are failures managed like waste.
With their own chain of command compromised and time running out, the three agents build the case themselves, map by map, photograph by photograph, body by body. To stop what is happening in the dead ground, they will have to risk their jobs, their names, and maybe their lives, because the desert has been holding the truth for three years, and this time someone finally came looking.
