Echoes of the Veil

Charleston becomes the site of the second major breach. Memory no longer returns only as recollection-it moves through water, songs, houses, ledgers, graveyards, and bloodlines, forcing families to confront histories that have been preserved incorrectly, deliberately altered, or inherited without explanation.

The first warning comes inside the Devereaux home when an empty chair begins filling with seawater during a family dinner. The impossible event opens a buried history that the house, the family, and Charleston itself have learned not to acknowledge.

The Witness House responds to Charleston, but the crisis creates a new problem: the organization formed to resist centralized control now risks becoming an authority over other people's memories. As the team follows the echoes, they must distinguish testimony from possession, inheritance from ownership, and remembering someone from deciding what their memory means.

Zafira is forced to practice witness rather than use rage as protection. Nasir refuses to be reduced to his function as an aperture. Sam learns that information cannot always be solved by extracting it into a system-some testimony has to remain connected to the people, places, and sequence that give it meaning.

At its center, Echoes of the Veil asks a harder question than Book 1: when the past finally answers, who has the right to interpret what it says?
