Eldritch is an experimental novel that takes the reader on an adventure in two parts. In the first part of this book, Shovelton introduces a motley assortment of characters in twenty short stories. Some of these protagonists, oddballs, and antiheros include a talking feral cat, a sentient lifeform comprised of coffee beans bent on world domination, a Scottish tamale chef, a boy raised by wolves, and Barry Manilow. The dimensions these characters call home follow their own rules, and in many instances, as their death is imminent, their hidden powers are discovered. All the stories in the first half of Eldritch are linked by a mysterious man, who ushers the characters through a mysterious portal.
In the second part of Eldritch, the other side of the portal is revealed. To say more would be to deprive the reader of the surprising turn of events in the latter half of this book. Expect battles to be fought for the very existence of the universe, expect the characters introduced in part one to experience new adventures, and expect things to get weird.
This novel serves as sequel to Shovelton's first novel, Adversary, however enough background information is given throughout this novel to ensure that even if the reader has not yet read the first novel, they will understand Eldritch.
