These, like all other times, are interesting times. Although I have cautioned many a student of mine to avoid using the word "interesting" because in fact it conveys not very much. What I mean to convey, cloaked in this use of the word above, is the strange (to me) nearly overnight disappearance on subways and buses, waiting rooms and in Doctor's offices, of newspapers, books and magazines. But allow me to point out book stores have vanished as well. New York's Fifth Avenue is no longer graced with Scribbner's, B. Dolton, Doubleday, Brentano's, Borders, Books-A-Million, Walden's Rizzoli; the giant Coliseum Bookstore no longer graces mid-town's west side. And, the Black Orchid and Murder Inc. no longer color Manhattan's east side. Instead, people are ensconced on their I-Phones, either texting, gaming, e-mailing, shopping, or, even phoning, but rarely might one espy a novel or collection of Short Stories open on an I-Phone. And, certainly, gone are the smells of fresh newsprint, or the newspapers folded to the day's crossword, above the fold headline, or to the back sport's page.
