In Footsteps: A Son's Journey, Josh Wolfe has spent years avoiding the memory of the volcanologist father he lost at Mount Saint Helens. When his mother announces plans to remarry, the fear of losing his father all over again forces Josh to confront the past he has kept buried.

His search begins with old newspaper reports and conversations with the people who knew his father best. What starts as a journey through grief soon becomes something larger: a determination to understand the science that claimed his father's life and to continue the work he left behind.

Josh enters the University of Washington to study geology and volcanology, following a path that carries him from Mount Saint Helens and the Cascades Volcano Observatory to Mount Etna, Hawaii, and the volcanic landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. Along the way, he falls in love with Emily, builds a new family, and learns that a life devoted to science can demand more than knowledge.

Then the danger becomes personal.

While working with Pierce County on Mount Rainier's lahar-warning system, Josh is swept into a violent mudflow and barely survives. The experience forces him to confront the same question his mother once faced with his father: how much risk is justified when the work is meant to save others?

As Mount Rainier grows increasingly restless, Josh must decide whether following in his father's footsteps means repeating his choices-or learning from them.
