Itzel grew up as the sole bright, sunny spark in the dark monastery of a death goddess. She was excellent at the killing part but she wasn't so great at following commands. After being (mostly) booted from their order, she has a better life now with the ragtag crew of the starship Calamity. But when she and the rest of her crew attend a gathering of the most powerful Families in the universe, her old superiors come calling with one last chance at redemption for her worst mistake. She must kill Lucien Chandra, a prince of one of those Families.

After her first attempt goes wrong, Itzel realizes that her target is far more than the repressed rule-follower he seems. Lucien is kind, intelligent, and open to new experiences, even if that new experience is waking up with an assassin poised over his bed. She's just starting to explore a future where she doesn't kill at her goddess's whims when sabotage strikes the Family Summit.
