Dante awakens in a dark and tangled forest with no idea how he strayed so far from the right path. When three fierce beasts drive him back from the light, hope arrives in the form of Virgil, the ancient Roman poet who offers to guide him by another road. Soon Dante is standing before the gates of Hell, crossing a river crowded with frightened souls, and descending into a world where every step carries him deeper into danger.
Through storms, burning tombs, boiling rivers, twisted forests, fiery deserts, and pits crawling with serpents, Dante meets the dead and hears the stories that brought them there. He sees lovers swept through endless winds, tyrants buried in blood, thieves transformed by snakes, false counselors hidden inside flames, and demons guarding pools of boiling pitch. Some souls are furious, some proud, some sorrowful, and some still clinging to the very choices that led them into suffering.
Yet the farther Dante travels, the stranger and more terrifying the journey becomes. Beyond monstrous guardians and the deepest circles waits a frozen world of betrayal, where even the ruler of Hell is trapped in the darkness below. With Virgil beside him and the road growing more dangerous at every turn, Dante must keep moving downward before he can ever hope to rise again. What will he find at the very bottom of Hell, and will he ever see the stars again?
