Issues in TESOL

Perspectives and Practice, the first in the Issues in TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) book series, presents those issues in TESOL that are of concern to teachers when coming to understand the various aspects involved in second language acquisition (SLA) and the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. This includes examining the place of some of the most prominent and prevailing principles and perspectives influencing SLA and the place of educational theory in the development and teaching of lessons, the supervision of students, and the running of classrooms. As such, this book provides an understanding of a wide range of learning theories that can assist teachers in being able to better their craft, and to implement methods, approaches, techniques, and strategies that can underpin their curriculum or lessons in order to support student learning and knowledge development. The book also, importantly, considers the role of classroom management theories, and in particular, the means of encouraging and promoting positive learner behavior. Solidly grasping such concepts along with those that can influence second language acquisition from aspects of language, planning and policy, to culture, identity, and intercultural communication, can assist teachers in keeping learners on task, while gifting instructors with the skills necessary to preempt any potential problems, by giving them the ability to deal with those issues that may impinge upon a lesson in ways that are swift, effective, and appropriate.
