Book One explained what Rumi understood about the human being. This book asks a harder question: what difference does any of it make on a Tuesday morning, when someone insults you, when you are frightened, when a plan fails, when an old wound returns?
Understanding is not the same as becoming. We can know that anger is destructive and still become angry. We can know that listening matters and still spend a conversation preparing our reply. We can know that life is short and still waste days. That gap - between what we know and how we live - is the whole subject of this book.
Across twelve chapters, The Practice of Becoming Human moves from observing your own reactions to recognising the voice Rumi called the nafs; from pausing before you react to seeing through your own interpretations; from listening without preparing an answer to loving without owning. It goes on to attachment, patience, gratitude, forgiveness, mortality, service, and finally to what it means to live awake.
Each chapter closes with a practice. The early chapters give seven days of small exercises and a nightly journal. The later chapters ask for something longer - a fortnight, or three weeks - because the material deserves it. A closing section gathers the practices for daily use, and an appendix to Book One's reflection questions makes this volume usable on its own.
This is not a book to read quickly. Its own introduction advises one chapter at a time, with time between them. It is written for readers who want to do the work rather than admire it, and who would rather be given a practice than a conclusion.
This is Book Two of six.
