Roemello thought he was done with magic. Months ago, he walked into The Humble Sneaker Store alone and returned the sky-blue sneakers that once danced him across the school gym and carried him all the way to the moon.

Mr. Laces' shop is dark, and Mr. Laces is trapped inside it. Someone has stolen the First Thread, the golden strand that holds every pair of magic shoes together, and Sunbeam Town's happiest memories are snapping one by one. Behind it all are the Shadow Stitchers, patched-together weavers older than memory, who want the sneakers back and every bright moment their stitching holds.

Roemello and his best friend, Reggie, have three days to find the thief before the Stitchers weave a pattern over the whole town, a world where no one ever stumbles and no one ever chooses again. But the shoes are frightened, a new friend is hiding a secret, and saving everyone will cost Roemello something he can never get back.
