No single person is more responsible for preparing the way for the ordination of women in the Church of England and the Episcopal Church than Maude Royden (1876-1956). But her contributions went beyond her pioneering advocacy of a woman's right to exercise priestly ministry. She was also a leader in the political suffrage movement, a social reformer, a pacifist, a spiritual director, and a world-renowned preacher and author. Her writing on women, war and peace, the future of the church, morality, and theology are as relevant in our troubled time as they were in hers.
In this book, the first anthology of Royden's work in over eighty years, Kerry Walters assembles selections from a wide and representative range of her published work. In addition to an introductory essay about her life, message, legacy, and relevance, each of the selections are accompanied by short prefaces that situate them in their context and summarize their main points.
