You drag the brush.
They climb the tree and earn the difference.
On a tree crew the hierarchy is visible from the street. The groundie drags brush and feeds the chipper. The climber is in the canopy making the cuts. The gap between them in pay and in standing is large, and nobody on the crew is especially motivated to explain how you cross it.
This book explains it: the climbing skills and the certification ladder, what a certified arborist actually knows that a competent cutter does not, and how tree biology, pruning standards and risk assessment turn a labourer into a tradesperson whose opinion is worth paying for.
It is written for the twenty-to-thirty-five year old already on a crew, and for the office worker who has decided they want to work outdoors and has no idea whether this is a career or a summer job. Chapter one starts where you are standing, with the work you can already claim.
There is no shortage story here, and you should be suspicious of anyone selling you one. The government's own projection for this occupation is average growth - not a boom. The honest case is different and better: it is a very large, low-paid entry pool feeding a much smaller, better-paid destination, and most people in that pool never learn the destination exists.
It is equally straight about what is changing. Remote sensing and imaging are moving fastest in utility line-clearance work, which is why this book is deliberately not about that, and written assessment work is more exposed than the industry likes to admit. What holds its value is the climb, the on-site judgement, and a signed opinion carrying a named person's liability. An Australian appendix covers the local qualification separately.
The tree does not care how strong you are. It cares whether you know where to cut.
