The Far Fires

The lights have been out for a long time. Up the mountain, Petra has built something out of the after that nobody thought possible: a network of survivors who gather every Friday for bread and candles and the slow patient work of being people instead of wolves.

Then the smoke appears on the eastern ridge.

Not their smoke. Far fires, patient, orange, moving a camp at a time toward home. Petra has watched the world long enough to know that what reaches west out of a dead country is not coming to share a meal. When a soft modest stranger named Hallie stumbles into the basin half dead, she brings with her the first hint of what the fires really are, and a name: Merrick, the man she walked four months across a continent to find, trapped now in a dead city where someone has the lights working again.

What follows is a journey down into Denver and back, a homecoming that turns lethal, a ride north to warn another valley, and at last a reckoning in country none of them have walked, where the thing in the dark wears the voices of the people it has eaten and waits at the edge of every firelight for someone to walk out to it.

Petra, Maddy, and John have already paid for the rules they know. Now they have to decide whether knowing is enough, or whether the heart and the spine and the wall have one more ride in them before the long dusk takes the candle for good.
