What would you ask God if you knew you had exactly one hour?
Elias Mercer has spent most of his life looking for causes. A retired systems engineer, he understands failures, assumptions, consequences, and the uncomfortable difference between an explanation and an excuse.
But there are failures he has never been able to reconcile.
He remembers September 11. He has stared at the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He has watched people kill in the name of religion, watched humanity consume a fragile world without restraint, and wondered how children can suffer from diseases they did nothing to deserve.
He also lives with a quieter catastrophe: major depression, a darkness that has slowly separated what Elias knows from what he can feel.
Then, during an early-morning walk beside a river, a stranger tells him he has sixty minutes.
Sixty minutes with God.
Elias does not ask for blessings. He asks for answers.
Why create human beings capable of atrocity? Why remain hidden? Why do some prayers seem answered while others disappear into silence? Why does a child's body betray her? Where is God when suffering continues anyway?
But time is running out. And somewhere during the hour, the interrogation changes direction.

The Hour He Was Given is literary fiction about faith without certainty, depression without sentimentality, and the human demand that existence explain itself. It offers no miraculous cure and no tidy solution to suffering-only an intimate confrontation between a wounded man and the possibility that some answers may change us without explaining everything.
