THE NECESSARY POWER

Hardly any political term is as morally suspicious as power. In contemporary discourse it is almost automatically linked to oppression, hierarchy, and the corruption of freedom. Yet the absence of power can leave people just as unfree.

An individual who cannot resist an attacker is not free. A society that cannot defend its borders or enforce its laws is not virtuous-it is exposed. A legal system whose judgments carry no consequences is theater. Freedom without the capacity to protect its own conditions is vulnerability dressed in moral language.

The Necessary Power confronts this uncomfortable truth head-on. "Might makes right" is false if it claims that strength generates moral correctness. The stronger party does not become just by winning. But power remains decisive for a different reason: it determines which norms, rights, and political orders can actually endure under real conditions.
