THE SUN IS DYING.SHE'S OUR LAST CHANCE.The sun hiccuped. For 0.84 seconds, it stopped.Eight years later, it's 3.3% dimmer. Crops are failing above the 45th parallel. The Thames froze in May. The world calls it the Dimming. The truth is classified.Commander Mara Quill has spent 438 days staring at our dying star from the Helios Forge. She knows it's not a natural minimum. Something is farming it.For two years, in the blind spot of every telescope, the Forge has been building the impossible: The Penrose Lance. Ten kilometres of degenerate matter and magnetic fury — a needle designed to be fired directly into the radiative zone and re-ignite the core with a tailored quantum vacuum collapse. The simulations all fail at 0.7 solar radii. No AI can survive the magnetic shear. No signal lasts more than three seconds. It needs a hand on the stick. All the way down.A one-way pilot.Mara volunteers knowing she won't come back. She falls into the sun at 1,400 km/s, into crushing plasma and a darkness that shouldn't be there. Inside the tachocline, she finds it: a knot of higher-dimensional edges. A lattice. A seed thrown from the galactic centre a billion years ago, designed to sip 15% of a star's light forever.Sol wasn't dying. It was being harvested. She cuts it. For 0.4 seconds, the sun goes black. Then it re-ignites at 101.3%. Earth thaws. Humanity celebrates.Until Aris Thorne points his telescope at the next dimming star. And the next. Seven farms in a line, stretching back to a nameless star at 94.2% — the first farm, three billion years old, covered in a mat of black mycelium where a planet used to be.The seeds are a network. And they have gardeners. Six lunar-mass folds in space, sitting at Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, watching their fields get weeded.Mara and Jonah build the Scythe — a 30-kilometer solar sailer with a white dwarf filament for a blade — and go to weed the road at 0.84c. Tau Ceti. Epsilon Eridani. A triple star braided together. Each cut makes the farmers turn around. The last cut burns a star to 240%. A nova visible from Earth in daylight. A signal fire that says: We know how to weed. We are coming home. But home is now blocked by six farmers who have been gardening for a billion years.
